Soccer festival brings the heat

A total of 35 teams from 12 clubs took part in the tournament which drew over 1000 enthusiastic attendees, making it one of the most vibrant school sporting events on the calendar.

THIS past weekend the grounds of Orient Islamic School buzzed with energy, talent, and community spirit as they hosted their fourth annual Soccer Festival — and what a spectacle it was.

With 35 teams from 12 clubs taking part, the tournament drew over 1000 enthusiastic attendees, making it one of the most vibrant school sporting events on the calendar. From the U9s to the U19s, learners lit up the field with incredible skill and sportsmanship. The air was filled with cheers and high-fives. Notable victories included the U11, U13, and U19 teams from Orient Islamic School, while KZN Lions made their mark in the U15 and U17 categories. It was a true celebration of youth talent, teamwork, and heart.

“The vibe was electric, and the passion on the field was contagious,” one parent remarked. Behind the scenes, Hyder Abdul Rahim and Demaine Ho Chong led a committed coaching team that works tirelessly during the week to prepare learners to compete at their best. Their hard work paid off.
Meanwhile, OIS continues to soar in volleyball, participating in the highly competitive Westville Volleyball League. With up to 10 top Durban schools in the mix, the level of play is fierce. OIS’s U16 team remains undefeated since 2024, and the U14s are climbing fast.

“Playing in this league gives us a chance to push our limits and play with pride,” said Aneesah Loonat, a coach from Orient Islamic School.
It’s clear that sport at OIS is more than just an extra-curricular — it’s a platform for growth, unity, and excellence.
