MGUIP invites nominations for office bearers

The Manor Gardens Urban Improvement Precinct (MGUIP) is taking shape with their special general meeting to elect office bearers set for June 18. All residents are invited to attend the meeting where the working structure of the MGUIP will be tabled.

AHEAD of the official start of the Manor Gardens Urban Improvement Precinct (MGUIP) in July, a special general meeting will be held to appraise residents on the non-profit company (NPC) that will head up the organisation tasked with upgrading the area.

The meeting will be held on Wednesday, June 18, between 18:00 and 20:00, at Manor Gardens Primary School. On the meeting agenda will be the election of office bearers for MGUIP and to report on the implementation of the UIP. MGUIP got the green light to operate from the eThekwini Municipality in April, following a council meeting where the request for a Special Rating Area was approved. According the ratepayers’ organisation, the inception date is July 1, the start of the municipality’s financial year.

“The additional rate, approved by the Municipal Council as part of the municipal budget, will be levied from July and appear on consolidated bills sent to all affected property owners. The UIP is expecting to receive the first month’s additional rate by the end of August and will commence the activation of the supplementary services as soon as possible thereafter,” said MGUIP.

The UIP was voted in by residents and businesses in November. Under the leadership of the steering committee, headed by chairperson Shaun Kruger, documents were submitted to the municipality for the civic organisation to be recognised. Residents were given until December 15 to voice their objections to establishing a UIP in Manor Gardens. In terms of the Municipal Property Rates Act of 2004, MGUIP must set up a non-profit company with a board of non-remunerated directors.

The board will be constituted by representatives of the property owners who will approve a business plan and the annual budget.  The deductions will be in June, July and August and the UIP will get the money in September for the three months. The MGUIP will work alongside the Manor Gardens Ratepayers’ Association which has its own board to hold the municipality accountable for service delivery to the area.
