Durban author goes from survival to purpose

In her recently launched book, Loved by Grace, Toward a Graceful Purpose, Berea author Lizanne Hattingh breaks the silence on how she survived 13 years in an abusive marriage. In the raw, personal memoir Hattingh inspires hope and resilience.

IN a world where abuse often hides in silence, Lizanne Hattingh’s voice rings out with courage, clarity, and compassion. Her new non-fiction book, Loved by Grace, Toward A Graceful Purpose, is both a raw personal memoir and a practical guide for women navigating the painful realities of abusive relationships. Based on her life, Hattingh recounts the harrowing experience of surviving 13 years in an abusive marriage.

“I had to start from scratch — with three children and nothing but faith, but even in the darkest moments, I always believed that there had to be more to life than pain,” she said.

Her belief in a brighter future is what fuels every page of the book. From emotional and financial recovery to navigating legal complexities and single parenting, Loved by Grace, Toward A Graceful Purpose walks alongside women who are finding their way out of abuse. “This is not just my story. It’s the story of many women — mothers, daughters, sisters — who are living in fear. I want them to know they are not alone,” said Hattingh.

The book is divided into three parts: a deeply personal account of Hattingh’s journey, a practical guide to recovery and rebuilding, and a journaling section filled with self-worth exercises. It’s a tool for healing and empowerment. “Sometimes, we wait for someone to rescue us. But healing starts the moment we say, ‘Enough. I am worthy of peace’,” said Hattingh, whose mission does not end with the book.

Her passion for empowering women has led her to host impactful community talks. A recent event in Westville brought together a powerful crowd of supporters, including Jess Ford from the Jess Ford Foundation, teachers, pastors, counsellors, legal representatives, and community members. “I was humbled to see so many people show up. It reminded me that there is strength in unity, and that our stories truly do matter,” said Hattingh.

Her recent talk held in Westville was more than just a book discussion — it became a healing space. Attendees shared stories, shed tears, and left feeling seen. Hattingh also uses her platform to educate support systems — family members, friends, colleagues, NPOs — on how to walk with survivors in love, not judgment. “Abuse thrives in silence and misunderstanding. But when we speak up and support one another, we begin to break the cycle.”

Loved by Grace, Toward A Graceful Purpose is not just a book. It’s a call to action, a lifeline, and a reminder that healing is possible. Lizanne Hattingh’s voice, once silenced by abuse, is now a guiding light for women who are still searching for theirs.
