Police seize counterfeit goods worth R400m

KZN police have prevented the streets of SA being flooded with suspected counterfeit goods worth an estimated street value of R400m. The two containers destined for Johannesburg were found at a freight depot in the south of Durban.

SUSPECTED counterfeit goods worth an estimated street value of R400m was discovered in two containers during an inspection of Durban’s freight depots by the SAPS on Tuesday.

KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said that the containers, destined for Johannesburg, were found  at a freight depot in the south of Durban.

He said, “Preliminary investigations have found that the containers entered the country from an Asian country and the cargo was destined for Alberton and central Johannesburg in Gauteng Province.”

The containers were allegedly mislabelled to hide its contents.  “Police were doing a routine cargo profiling when they found two containers which contained counterfeit designer clothes, jewellery and kitchenware. Both containers were fraudulently declared to be carrying furniture,” said Netshiunda.

He added, “Investigations are underway to uncover possible suspects who are responsible for importing the counterfeit goods into the country.”
