‘Swimming ban won’t affect Breathe World Ocean Day Swim’

Hundreds of swimmers from across the country are assured that the much-awaited Breathe World Ocean Day Swim will continue without interruptions, despite the swimming ban announced this week for South Coast beaches.

THE organisers of the Breathe World Ocean Day Swim have confirmed that the swimming ban for South Coast beaches currently does not influence Saturday’s event in Durban.

The fundraiser event has been hosted in Durban since 2021, welcoming hundreds of all-level swimmers from different countries and provinces to the city’s shores.

Organisers hope that this year’s offering will attract more than 500 swimmers. “The fundamental structure of the event will be similar to previous events; however, this year we are planning to get the public more involved through guided walks, beach clean-ups, entertainment and prize-giving.

Local swimmers take to the challenge at World Ocean Day Swim

“It is safe to swim in Durban. The swimming ban only applies to South Coast beaches where shark nets have been removed, and that is not the case with Durban beaches. Currently, there is no swimming ban in any area involving Saturday’s World Ocean Day Swim. We are, together with the safety team, constantly monitoring the situation and will ensure the safety of all participants is the top priority,” the organisers said.

The event, a brainchild of Breathe Ocean Conservation,  will take place at the Durban Beach Club, Browns Road, Point Waterfront.
