Salvation Army appeals for support
The Salvation Army, which runs the Thembela Eventide Home for the Aged on Montpelier Place, is appealing for donations of blankets for their elderly residents. The NPO is also seeking donors and sponsors for the feeding scheme which operates out of their church premises for six days a week.
THE Salvation Army church in Montpelier Place in Morningside is appealing for support and donations towards their blanket drive and feeding scheme.
Major Carin Holmes, who manages The Salvation Army’s Thembela Eventide Home for the Aged and ministers at the nearby church, said the NPO is on a mission to make sure that their elderly residents are warm throughout winter and the church has enough food to feed those in need.
She said, “We feed up to 60 homeless people for six days per week, with sandwiches and a plate of cooked food. Food parcels are given to families in need, if we have any to give. From time to time as we are able we supply them with toiletries, beanies, blankets and clothing which we are appealing for.”
The Salvation Army has a variety of units, including orphanages, rehabilitation centres, old age homes, shelters for abused women and children, hospitals, Aids babies homes, schools for the less fortunate, and soup kitchens which will benefit from the drive. The organisation also runs a community programme for the homeless, run by the Montpelier branch of the church.

“It is winter and it is cold. The need is greater than what we think and or know. We’re asking you to go through your cupboards, garage, when you shop buy a tin of something extra. Give a monetary donation to keep the gas burning, put fuel in our vehicles to render our service to the community,” said Holmes.
The Salvation Army is accepting food items that can be used to prepare meals and food parcels. They also require toiletries such as soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, shampoo, deodorant and facecloths among other items. “Any little gift item would be helpful. A simple blanket could have a huge impact,” said Holmes. The donations can be dropped off at Thembela Eventide Home at 68 Montpelier Place. For more information call 031 312 6360.
