26 DUT staff, students, alumni to take on Comrades Marathon

A total of 26 DUT staff, students and alumni are ready to run in the Ultimate Human Race, the Comrades Marathon taking place this Sunday. This marks an increase of nine entries this year.

THE DUT Employee Wellness and the Sport Administration unit recently hosted a Comrades Marathon Send-off luncheon to wish the best of luck to all the athletes who will be running the Comrades Marathon.

Amongst the 26 athletes are two members of executive management, the interim Chief Financial Officer, Siboniso Shabalala, and the newly appointed Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Teaching and Learning, Professor Vusi Gumede.

“In addition to the two executives, there are 13 other staff members who will be running,” the university shared.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor of People and Operations at DUT, Dr Vuyo Mthethwa, shared her excitement about the increase in the number of DUT athletes running the Comrades Marathon, from 17 last year to 26.

“For me it’s simply about finishing and enjoying the race. Even if they don’t finish, it is about doing one’s best,” shared Dr Mthethwa, who thanked the athletes for flying the DUT flag high.

In closing, the DUT Registrar, Dr Maditsane Nkonoane, assured the athletes that the DUT support team, consisting of executive management, staff and students, will be stationed at five points along the Comrades Marathon route to cheer and support them. The stations are Umlaas Road near Camperdown, Inchanga, Hillcrest, Pinetown and Berea near the DUT gate 8.
