Severe weather warning in Durban for upcoming week
Weather forecast model indicates a Level 2 severe thunderstorm with widespread showers until the early hours of Tuesday, June 10, and a Level 4 alert for damaging winds is also expected in eThekwini throughout KZN from the early hours of Tuesday into Wednesday morning.
The public is advised to take note of the weather warning issued by the South African Weather Service (SAWS) for the upcoming week.
In addition to the Level 2 warning, a Level 4 warning of damaging waves is expected from early Tuesday morning into Thursday. All the above weather alerts include the eThekwini region.
“Scattered to widespread showers are predicted over most parts of the province on June 9. These will be accompanied by severe damaging winds, heavy downpours, and very rough seas along the coast, including eThekwini. This will continue until Thursday morning. This may result in the flooding of roads, bridges, and settlements,” eThekwini Municipality warned.

“The heavy downpour may also cause poor driving conditions, damage to infrastructure, destruction of mud-based houses, disruption to harbours /ports and difficulty in navigation, as well as disruption of coastal activities. Motorists are urged to exercise extreme caution and maintain a safe following distance while driving on wet roads. The Municipality’s Disaster Management Unit and emergency services are on standby.”
The City advises residents to exercise caution, to stay indoors if possible, and to avoid travelling unless absolutely necessary. “Residents living in flood-prone areas, including informal settlements, are advised to take the necessary safety precautions. The public is reminded to not cross flooded rivers and streams.”
This alert is subject to change, as the SAWS will update the warning accordingly.
