7 male-friendly healthcare spaces for free screenings in Durban
These facilities offer free body health checks, and screenings of prostate, colorectal, and skin cancer.
RESEARCH indicates that a significant number of men are hesitant about undergoing health screenings due to various factors, including concerns about inconvenience, perceived lack of risk and societal pressure to appear strong and avoid any perceived weakness.
As we observe Men’s Health Month in June, we give you seven places that provide free health checks and screenings in Durban. These spaces are more male-friendly healthcare facilities. In an attempt to make it easier for men to access regular health check-ups and prioritise their well-being, Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) is providing free men’s health screenings across the country through the CANSA Hollard ManVan, and eThekwini Municipality has launched six dedicated men’s only health corners at primary clinics across the city.

This city’s initiative emerged from a growing demand for male-friendly healthcare spaces. These initiatives bring free health checks and awareness to men, especially in areas with limited access to healthcare. They offer free body health checks, screenings of prostate, colorectal, and skin cancer. According to the city, the idea was an initiation from the national Department of Health, which identified that men were reluctant to visit healthcare facilities. The city was brought on board to help close this gap. Head of Health in the city, Rosemary van Heerden, said men were reluctant to discuss their personal health issues and usually sought help as a last resort.
“We launched the pilot project at the Pinetown Clinic, aiming to change the mindset where men typically sought medical help only as a last resort or after trying self-medication or alternative remedies. The pilot began around two years ago and due to increasing demand, we have since expanded to six clinics with dedicated men’s health sections,” said Van Heerden.
She clarified that the facilities are still open to everyone, but these six clinics specifically have sections within them that are exclusively for men only.
