Umbilo resident carjacked by employee

A 27-year-old man who was employed as a driver has been accused of carjacking his employer. He and an accomplice allegedly held the victim at gunpoint before making off with the vehicle.

UMBILO SAPS is urging residents and businesses to be extra cautious and do thorough vetting when employing jobseekers. This comes after a resident was allegedly carjacked by a 27-year-old man that he had employed as a driver.

Umbilo SAPS spokesperson Captain Pumzile Biyana said that the victim and his friend were seated in a parked vehicle on Bartle Road at around 20:00 on Thursday, when they were accosted by two armed males. One of the suspects is the former employee.

Biyana said, “The complainant alleges that a sliver Toyota Etios parked behind him and two men got out of the vehicle. They approached him, one of them was carrying a firearm.”

It is alleged that the armed suspect then pointed the firearm towards the complainant and instructed him to get out of his car.

“He took his bag and his cellphone. The suspects got into his vehicle and drove off towards Rossburgh. The suspect, who was driving the car (Etios) when they arrived, followed them. The owner of the car alleges that he employed the suspect (driver), and his car was registered to provide e-hailing services,” said Biyana.

The suspect, from Lamontville, was later apprehended by Umbilo SAPS members and charged with carjacking. Biyana further cautioned residents: “We are also warning the community against sitting around late at night in your cars. Please avoid doing that.”
