Hollywoodbets Durban July proves a winner for eThekwini economy

More than 40 000 people attended the Hollywoodbets Durban July 2025, generating over 4500 jobs while contributing R840m to eThekwini's GDP in one weekend. The figures give a strong indication of the growing appeal and allure of the premier horseracing event which has become Durban's beacon of economic inclusivity, tourism excellence, and cultural celebration.

A STAGGERING R840m was injected into eThekwini’s GDP with the hosting of the internationally renowned Hollywoodbets Durban July 2025.

The figures were confirmed by the betting giant and the city, which applauded the success of the horseracing event that brought over 40 000 people to eThekwini. According to the figures released by Hollywoodbets, punters backing the winning horse, The Real Prince, were not the only ones left satisfied with the weekend as 4500 jobs were created in hosting the event.

This was much to the delight of Hollywoodbets brand and communications manager Devin Heffer who said, “The Hollywoodbets Durban July is more than a race; it’s a cultural and economic celebration that brings people and opportunities together. Year after year, this event demonstrates its ability to empower communities, uplift small businesses, and drive meaningful economic growth. It is more than just an event for Hollywoodbets, there is a careful consideration to our sustainable impact on the areas in which we do business.”

The Hollywoodbets Durban July 2025 was aptly hosted under the theme of ‘Marvels of Mzansi,’ which celebrated South Africa’s rich cultural heritage and diversity while making a significant socio-economic contribution, reaffirming its status as one of the country’s most influential lifestyle and sporting events.

The July was hailed by eThekwini municipality Mayor Cyril Xaba for being a powerful economic catalyst for the City of Durban and KwaZulu-Natal province. “The Hollywoodbets Durban July is a cornerstone of our city’s eventing calendar and a testament to how public-private partnerships can deliver real impact. The economic injection and job creation are proof of what is possible when we celebrate Durban’s unique culture on a world-class stage,” said Xaba.

The jobs were created in various sectors, including hospitality, transport, security, logistics, retail and event services. Accommodation establishments across the city recorded an 80% occupancy rate. The July also contributed R50m in tax revenue to local and national government structures through strongly focusing on local procurement, emerging creative talent, and inclusive development, as thousands of entrepreneurs, designers, performers, and service providers participated in the festivities.
