Charities rake in big bucks at Comrades

This year's Comrades Marathon didn't just break running records — it smashed fundraising goals too! Over R8m was raised for charity, with six NPOs receiving life-changing donations.

THE official Comrades Marathon Association (CMA) cheque handover ceremony saw six NPOs walk away with big bucks recently.

This year, the spirit of The Ultimate Human Race shone brightly, with a record-breaking total of R8 012 438 raised for the CMA’s charities.
Awarded charities were Community Chest, Childline KZN, Rise Against Hunger, Childhood Cancer Foundation South Africa (CHOC), SanPark and Hillcrest Aids Centre.

The Top Fundraiser title once again went to Mahesh Ratanjee of Community Chest who reached his target and beat it. Although his mission to race was threatened by severe flu, he remained resolute and “did what had to be done for charity”. “It is both an honour and a pleasure to be part of this charitable event. I shall do it again, as long as health permits,” Ratanjee shared.

“Community Chest is celebrating the R1 280 128 raised through the Comrades Marathon 2025. We extend our gratitude to the Comrades Marathon Association for the honour of being an official charity since the inception of Amabeadibeadi. We thank the CMA, sponsors, our runners, donors and volunteers for making this happen. We are proud of Mahesh for his selfless efforts,” said Fadeela Deedat, PRO of Community Chest.

Mqondisi Ngcobo, the CMA chairperson, added that their target was set on R6m; however, it was exceeded. He attributed the success to the hard work of the athletes, charities, board members, and the CMA committee.
