Kurten Challenge raises funds for Highway Hospice

Bowls, braais, and big hearts. The Kurten Bowling Challenge brought together local clubs at Berea Bowling Club for a sunny Sunday of fun and giving back. With live music, laughter, and great sportsmanship, the event raised R4500 for Highway Hospice.

A SUNDAY filled with clear skies, happy people, bowlers, braai, live music, winners and losers. This was the atmosphere at the Berea Bowling Club when local clubs challenged each other for a good cause.

The Kurten Bowling Challenge, a brainchild of Shelley Kurten, was not just a day of bowls; it was a charity affair aimed at raising funds for the Highway Hospice. Indeed, the support paid off, and by the day’s end R4500 was raised. Kurten was inspired to give back to the hospice which took care of her late husband during his cancer battle.

“Highways Hospice is very close to my heart. It was there for me during difficult times. This is my very first event of this nature, and through lucky draws, donations and raffles, it became a success. I hope the fundraiser becomes an annual offering,” shared Kurten.

A member of the Berea Bowling Club herself, she expressed her gratitude to the club’s management, all sponsors, bowlers, and the community.

Highway Hospice CEO John’o Olds said, “We are over the moon, so pleased with this charitable gesture by everybody who played their part. The sporting clubs and their supporters, Shelley Kurten, and the Berea Bowling Club, have demonstrated a positive spirit of giving back.”

Olds added that as more people need hospice care, they rely largely on events like the one at the generous Berea Bowling Club, sponsored by Shelley Kurten.

Besides the hosts Berea Bowling Club, the other participating clubs were Queens Bowling Club, Durban Collegians Bowling Club, Umhlali Bowling Club, Westville Country Club, Hillcrest Bowling Club and Allan Park Bowling Club from Gauteng.

The day was sealed with live entertainment courtesy of the evergreen band, Let It Be.
