New lease on life for ‘problematic’ Hartley Road

One no longer needs a 4x4 vehicle to cross sections of East, Hartley, and Silver Oaks roads, thanks to recent completion of road upgrades, after a long outcry by motorists and road users.

THE once problematic Hartley Road has had a new lease on life, bringing relief to residents and motorists in and around Overport.

According to Ward 27 councillor, Ernest Smith, the work was long overdue.
“Hartley Road has been considered a road of despair by many, considering the  state it’s been in over the last two to three years. Before the water relays (new water lines) were installed, Hartley Road experienced burst pipes a few times a week, which infuriated residents. With the relays complete, the road itself needed to be repaired as it was best described as an off-road track.

“The good news is that with the constant pressure from myself and organisations such as the Overport Ratepayers Association (ORA), the road is finally getting a new dose of life with a new layer of tar being set down to address these long-standing complaints.

“My gratitude goes out to the ORA and residents alike, where we banded together and constantly pushed the municipality to address this issue for the betterment of the community as a whole. This hand-in-hand approach works well when you have the same intended outcome for the community. Together, we are definitely stronger when holding the municipality accountable for its mandate to service the ratepayers and residents,” Smith concluded.
