Measures in place to ensure integrity of 2025 matric exams

With 6450 invigilators and tight security plans in place, the province is ready for a smooth and credible 2025 examination season, says KZN Education MEC Sipho Hlomuka.

THE KwaZulu-Natal Department of Education has beefed up security and safety measures to ensure the integrity ahead of the National Senior Certificate examinations which commence next Tuesday, October 21.

A total of 6450 invigilators have been tasked with overseeing 6712 examination rooms where the Class of 2025 will write their final matric exams. KZN Education MEC Sipho Hlomuka said the province has the largest cohort in the country, which increased by 3% when compared to the previous year.

He said the 179 751 full-time and 16 148 part-time candidates, making a total of 195 899 learners, will sit for their final examinations at 1705 public centres and 61 private examination centres throughout the province. “This upward trend is a clear reflection of the Department’s sustained efforts to improve learner retention, reduce drop-out rates, and expand access to quality education,” said Hlomuka. “It also demonstrates the growing confidence of learners and parents in the public education system.”

KZN will print 113 question papers, totalling 35 192 785 printouts, to be written across 27 morning and 27 afternoon sessions. The materials will be will be distributed through 13 storage points and 103 distribution and collection centres. Hlomuka said that measures are in place to prevent leaks and to ensure the safety of the centres.

He said, “All systems are in place to manage potential challenges, including inclement weather. We are working closely with the Joint Operations and Communication Committee (JOCOM) to ensure examinations proceed safely, securely, and credibly. All schools and marking centres have been advised on emergency procedures to ensure exams proceed without interruption.”

The marking of exam papers will commence on December 2 and conclude on December 12 across 32 marking centres. The results for the 2025 NSC exams are scheduled to be released on January 13, 2026.
