Durban Metro Police rolls out SMS alerts for outstanding traffic fines
Received a traffic fine message from DMPS? It’s legit! Durban Metro Police has launched SMS notifications for outstanding fines.
MOTORISTS with outstanding fines will soon receive SMS notification demands to pay as Durban Metropolitan Police Service (DMPS) begins rolling out their new initiative.
Launched during Transport Month, the initiative aimed at encouraging timely compliance and improve road safety enforcement, has created a stir on social media. On the eThekwini Municipality Facebook page, Colleen Trollip said, “How about creating a Zapper code for payments on your fines? They still refer to Cheque payments and fax numbers. So outdated. Put a Zapper code on the fines and more people will probably pay.”
Rajesh Juglall called on the City to, “Respond promptly but safely, avoiding the potholes.” This was supported by Akesh Parthab, who said, “Can we send the municipality SMS to say the roads are damaging our cars?”

The SMS will read as follows: “Dear Motorist, you have outstanding Traffic Fines, for enquiries, please contact Durban Metro Police on 031 311 2862/3 or email Traffic.Fines@durban.gov.za.”
Kurtn Edge Jnr who had once checked on his fines said, “Last time I called in to check the lady said I don’t have any fines… and guess what I have many tickets placed on my car ranging from 100 – 1000, not to mention speed cameras, because I fly on the freeway. So am still confused here.”
According to the City, the messages will be sent directly from the eThekwini Municipality and are legit. “Please note that these messages are legitimate and sent directly by the Municipality, they are not scams. Motorists are encouraged to respond promptly and settle outstanding fines through approved municipal channels,” said eThekwini.
