Quick-thinking security officers foil Morningside theft

A suspect caught stealing a gas cylinder in Morningside was arrested.

QUICK action by Ensure Security and eThekwini Metro Police led to the arrest of a suspect following an alleged theft incident in Morningside in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Kyle van Reenen of Ensure Security said that the incident occurred at approximately 02:10 near a property along Madeline Road. He said that a vigilant officer had spotted the suspect in action during a routine patrol.

“The officers witnessed the suspect jumping over a wall from an adjoining property and attempting to conceal a gas cylinder before fleeing the scene on foot,” alleged Van Reenen.

A chase then ensued and the suspect was intercepted by Metro Police officers who were patrolling in the area at the time of the incident. Van Reenen said Ensure Security officers identified the suspect as the same individual seen fleeing the scene.

“Upon returning to the scene, the suspect led officers to the location where he had hidden the stolen gas cylinder. The stolen item was confirmed to have been taken from a nearby property, and the suspect was transported to Berea SAPS for further investigation and processing,” said Van Reneen.

He praised the teamwork between the security officers and Metro Police, saying, “This incident once again demonstrates the strength of integrated security efforts in tackling crime across the greater Morningside precinct.”
