Orient girls crowned volleyball champs in international tournament
Orient Islamic School’s girls dominated the AISJ Volleyball Tournament in Johannesburg, winning every match to claim the championship title.
THE U16 Girls Volleyball Team from Orient Islamic School (OIS) made history by claiming the U16 Division Championship at the American International School of Johannesburg Volleyball Tournament recently.
This marked their first out-of-town event. The two-day tournament brought together 32 teams and over 350 players from across South Africa and neighbouring countries, with 95 matches played across six courts.

Their journey began with a tough opening game against Cathula, the defending national champions. Few expected them to win, but the Durban side displayed composure beyond their years, setting the tone for the rest of their campaign. They went on to beat a team from Tanzania, proving their adaptability and skill against international opponents.
Coach Aneesah Loonat praised her team’s dedication: “Training, perseverance, and dedication were the key factors that carried us through. The girls worked incredibly hard to balance academics, social life, and sport — and it paid off beautifully.”
Player Azkaa Mominaa Ahmed said, “My first national tournament was something I’ll never forget. The cheers, the teamwork, and the feeling of being part of something bigger made me so happy.”

Parents Rafeek and Riswana Nakooda, whose daughter Sanaa Habiba Nakooda plays for the team, shared, “Every win was a thrill, but the most amazing part was watching how humble they remained. Their unity and determination made this victory possible.”
The OIS U16 girls’ victory was seen as more than a trophy: “It’s an inspiring milestone for youth sport in Durban and a powerful reminder that teamwork and perseverance can turn first-time challengers into national champions.”
