Umbilo, Umkhumbane face water supply woes
The entire Southern Aqueduct bulk water supply system is affected, including the Pinetown South System.
The communities of Umbilo and Umkhumbane are braving another day of water troubles due to low-pressure supply and interruptions.
Umbilo and Umkhumbane, which together with Coedmore, Farningham Ridge, Hillary, Malvern, Memorial Park, Mount Vernon, Queensburgh, and Umhlatuzana, fall under Ridley Park Reservoir, will face the challenges “until further notice”.
Scores of other areas around eThekwini Municipality were not spared. This is in addition to water rationing taking place in areas supplied through the Southern Aqueduct, which is undergoing a major upgrade.
eThekwini Municipality today (July 13) informed the public that due to operational challenges at the Durban Heights Water Treatment Works, Reservoir 1 has been isolated to allow the technical team to insert a camera into the pipeline for inspection.

“As a direct consequence, Reservoir 2 is running at critically low levels, as it is currently supplying the zones normally served by Reservoir 1. This reduced hydraulic capacity is now impacting the entire Southern Aqueduct bulk water supply system, including the Pinetown South System, resulting in reduced water pressure and supply interruptions in downstream areas,” the City said.
For more information regarding water supply, residents are encouraged to download the eThekwini Municipality Mobile App to log faults, send a WhatsApp message to 073 148 3477, call the toll-free number 080 311 1111, or email Eservices@durban.gov.za.
