Silence as protesters demand an end to gender-based violence

Silence echoed through Durban’s South Beach as men and women lay on the ground for 15 minutes, honouring victims of gender-based violence and calling for urgent action in a country where the crisis claims lives daily.

SILENCE spoke volumes in South Beach, Durban, as scores of women and men heeded the call from Women For Change to be part of the nationwide campaign to end gender-based violence, which has been declared a national crisis in South Africa.

Carrying placards with messages such as “tame your beast” and “when will it end”, protesters young and old lay on the ground for 15 minutes to highlight the plight faced by women in SA. According to statistics, 15 women are killed while 173 are sexually assaulted daily in SA.

“Sekwanele (Enough is Enough),” said Ntombi Khumalo who was among the protesters.  “This is not a silent protest, but a movement towards change. If we do not fight for ourselves, who will do it for us?” she asked.

In silent prayers and meditation they remembered the survivors and fallen grandmothers, mothers, sisters, aunts and nieces, victims of gender-based violence.
