Durban set to light up New Year’s Eve with beachfront fireworks

From New Year’s Eve fireworks to the Durban Festive Season Carnival, the City is rolling out major entertainment activations as thousands flock to Durban this holiday season.

DURBAN is preparing for a vibrant lineup of festive entertainment events as visitor numbers continue to surge, positioning the city as a major holiday and entertainment destination this summer.

Addressing the media on the City’s Festive Season Management Plan, eThekwini Mayor Cyril Xaba said the strong turnout of visitors has created momentum for large-scale celebrations in the coming days. As part of the celebrations, the City will host the New Year’s Eve Fireworks Activation on December 31 at the Durban Beach Promenade, North Beach Pier and New Pier.

After going dark over the last few years, the midnight fireworks display is expected to draw large crowds. Xaba said, “this large-scale fireworks display will activate the beachfront at midnight, attract significant crowds, stimulate night-time economic activity, and deliver a memorable countdown experience.”

Entertainment will continue into the new year with the Durban Festive Season Carnival scheduled for January 2. The carnival will begin at the corner of Joseph Nduli Street and Dr Pixley KaSeme Street (West Street), proceed along Dr Pixley KaSeme Street and conclude at City Hall, Church Square. According to the mayor, the event will feature performances by popular artists and cultural groups.

The City has also recorded strong attendance at entertainment events throughout the festive season. “Total recorded attendance at 11 signature events currently stands at 83 000, with a projected additional 61 000 attendees expected between late December and early January,” Xaba said.

He said these events highlight Durban’s diversity as a tourism destination. “These activities demonstrate that Durban offers diverse tourism experiences and continues to position itself as Africa’s entertainment playground,” said Xaba.

With nearly all bathing beaches now open and law enforcement maintaining high visibility at entertainment zones, the City expects festive crowds to continue growing through Christmas and into the New Year.
