New chapter for ‘Elephant’ author at Mazisi Kunene Museum
Teen author Jose dos Santos has been named an ambassador of the Mazisi Kunene Manuscript Museum, marking a major milestone in his literary journey.
THE author of Elephant Jose dos Santos has opened a new chapter in his life as an ambassador of the Mazisi Kunene Manuscript Museum in Glenwood.
The Brettonwood High School matriculant and Umbilo resident was offered the role of being the face of the museum by the executive director of the Mazisi Kunene Foundation and widow of the late Poet Laureate, Mathabo Kunene. “I was shocked and honoured to be asked to take on this role by Mrs Kunene. It was definitely unexpected,” said 19-year-old Dos Santos.
At the launch of his book Elephant in mid-December at the Stella Sports Club, Kunene had invited Dos Santos to take a tour of the museum and to consider having his work on display there.

“This is an amazing book,” said Kunene. To Dos Santos she said, “I’ve come to claim you, to say that you have a home at the Mazisi Kunene Museum. We would love to nurture you and be part of your journey because for a lot of people you are telling a story, but we see more than that. The potential that you have. So, we would love to do our own meet and greet with you at the museum.”

Grabbing the opportunity with both hands, Dos Santos said he was surprised when it turned out to be more than that. “I was overwhelmed,” said a smiling Dos Santos. “It’s a huge role to take on, but I accepted the offer and look forward to the challenge of walking in the footsteps of the late poet and honouring his legacy.”
As his first task as ambassador, Dos Santos said he is looking for assistance in upgrading the museum located at 8 Delville Avenue in Glenwood. Before he heads to tour Botswana at the start of February, Dos Santos is appealing for donations and looking to raise funds for the much-needed upgrade. He has also appealed for help with getting more of his books published and sponsorship towards the tour of Botswana, and India later this year.

“From paint to volunteers and cash, we are looking to getting all the assistance that we can to get the project off the ground, and would appreciate any help,” said Dos Santos.
