Heatwave triggers water interruptions for Glenwood and Umbilo
A heatwave-driven surge in water demand has placed pressure on key eThekwini reservoirs, prompting water tanker deployment across Durban.
WATER tankers have been deployed across eThekwini as the heatwave continues to blanket the City, leading to a high demand of water which the municipality says is affecting reservoir levels in areas like Glenwood, Umbilo, Morningside, Essenwood, Greyville, Musgrave, and Windermere among others.
A number of reservoirs served by the Wiggins Water Works High Lift Pump Station are currently under pressure. Municipal spokesperson Gugu Sisilana said the demand has led to the interruption of water supply affecting the areas above.
She said the interruption is a result of low system pressures and exceptionally high water demand, exacerbated by the ongoing heatwave. Among other areas affected are Stamford Hill, AK near Greyville, Springfield, Glenmore, Carrington Heights, Sea View, UKZN, Westridge, Bonela, Cato Manor and Wiggins.
“Consequently, areas within certain reservoir supply zones are being affected. Technical teams from the Water Services Directorate are actively monitoring the system and implementing operational interventions to stabilise reservoir levels,” said Sisilana.

“Investigations and inspections may take several days to complete. Any issues identified that are affecting supply pressures will be addressed based on specific operational requirements.”
The interventions include detailed inspections of pipe routes, valve chambers, line valves, air valves and other critical infrastructure to identify and address any issues that may be contributing to reduced supply pressure.
“In the interim, water tankers will be deployed to supply affected communities. The municipality appeals to all residents to reduce water consumption during this critical period,” said Sisilana.
