‘Large volume’ of illicit cigarettes seized at CBD businesses

Law enforcement pounced on business premises in the Durban CBD and discovered large quantities of illicit cigarettes.

The Durban Metro Police Service SOD1 Bylaw Compliance Unit discovered a large quantity of illicit cigarettes during by-law enforcement operations on Bertha Mkhize Street in the Durban CBD last night (March 10).

“Customs officials were called to the scene and, after inspecting the cigarettes, confirmed them to be illicit. The cigarettes were detained by the Customs Department for further investigation,” shared Colonel Boysie Zungu.

Further inspections were reportedly conducted at additional businesses identified as suppliers, where a large quantity of suspected illicit cigarettes was also discovered and detained.

“Due to the large volume recovered, the estimated value of the detained cigarettes is still being assessed by Customs. Durban Metro Police will continue working with relevant authorities to combat illegal trade and protect lawful businesses in the city,” concluded Zungu.
