IEC encouraged by voter turnout in Durban
Independent Electoral Commission says it is satisfied with the operations and voter turnout across eThekwini.
VOTING stations across the wards in the Berea Mail distribution area have experienced smooth operations, as the 21:00 cut off time of the monuntal LGE 2026 approaches.
Jaiden Bramwell, 18, DHS learner and hockey player, said voting is the right thing to do, as he believes change is possible. Ninety-two-year old Violet Morrow of Musgrave has voted in all elections since 1994, and “was not about to moss this one”. Her hope is that things keep getting better, “the right people, elected today, must see to it that we enjoy better days,” she said.
“Election officials have worked tirelessly to prepare 5 028 voting stations across KwaZulu-Natal to ensure their readiness to open at 07:00 and welcome 6 022 350 registered voters to participate in the 2026 Local Government Elections.

“The Commission can confirm that the voting station had sufficient materials to continue operations, bar the voters’ roll that needed to be reprinted for the voting station. By plan, we do issue a new security pack and ballot papers specifically for the Election Day,” said Masinga,
Masinga indicated that Special Voting ballots, together with today’s, will all start a counting process tonight. She assured that all storage facilities were watertight safe, and secured, with help of private security companies and SAPS.

Voting stations will close at 21:00. The Commission reminds voters that they may only vote at the voting station where they are registered. Voters are encouraged to verify their registration details and confirm where they are registered before leaving home to avoid unnecessary delays or inconvenience on Election Day.
