Stella Park Bowling Club turns to community for support

Amid ongoing financial constraints, Stella Park Bowling Club is appealing for community support while they await news on a liquor licence.

FOLLOWING this week’s members-only special general meeting to discuss the future of the Stella Park Bowling Club in Umbilo, a public meeting has been called to address residents on its outcomes that will determine the running of the club going forward.

Stella Park Bowling Club has been hit with financial difficulties amid delays in securing a liquor licence, pushing it to the brink of closure. Lara Richards, secretary of the Stella Park Bowling Club, said the meeting with stakeholders and residents will be held at the club on 337 Bartle Road at 17:45 on Monday, March 23.

She said, “At present, the club is facing a challenging period while the process to reinstate its liquor licence is being finalised. We are calling on residents to come out in their numbers and attend the meeting, because the closure of the Stella Park Bowling Club will affect everyone in the community and not just the members.”

Stella Park Bowling Club president Allen Brink emphasised the importance of community involvement in the meeting. He said Stella Park Bowling Club is more than just a sports facility, but a valuable community asset.

“Should the club be forced to close, there is a real risk that the property could become neglected over time. Experience elsewhere has shown that unused facilities can deteriorate, become overgrown, and potentially attract undesirable activity,” said Brink.

“This would not only result in the loss of a long-standing community institution but could also have a negative impact on the surrounding neighbourhood, including safety, upkeep of the area, and overall property values.”

Looking ahead, he said once the liquor licence has been reinstated, the club intends to resume normal operations. This will include a fully operational bar with braai and social facilities and regular social and sporting events.

“Stella Park Bowling Club has served this community for over 90 years, and with your support, it can continue to do so for many years to come. We encourage you to attend the meeting and be part of securing the future of this important community facility,” said Brink.
