Glenwood High brings Easter joy to Berea pre-school

Community, compassion and connection took centre stage during Glenwood High’s early Easter visit to a local ECD centre.

LEARNERS from Glenwood High School brought smiles and laughter to young children at Makabongwe Pre-School in Berea where they delivered tasty sweet treats for the little ones ahead of their Easter break next week.

The outreach initiative, led by Glenwood’s executive and supported by sponsors, saw the high school boys spend time engaging with children aged three to six. The visit created a festive atmosphere filled with fun, connection and a strong sense of community at the inner-city early childhood development centre.

“At Glenwood, our guiding principle of ‘Building Great Men Since 1910’ speaks to developing young men who understand the value of service and humanity,” said Glenwood High School principal Morne Scott.

He said the initiative aligned with the school’s values of service and leadership. “Opportunities like this allow our boys to engage meaningfully with their community, reinforcing empathy, responsibility and leadership beyond the classroom,” said Scott.

Makabongwe Pre-School, which caters to around 180 children from the Warwick Junction area, was founded in 1995. As a registered non-profit organisation, the school provides early education and daily meals, relying largely on donations and community support.

Abigail Nair, owner of Bootlegger Musgrave, one of the sponsors who contributed towards the Easter initiative that ensured a memorable occasion for the young learners, was full of praise for the boys.

“We are proud to support Glenwood High School in initiatives like this. Their commitment to holistic growth – across academics, sport, culture and service – is evident in the way their learners engage with purpose and compassion,” said Nair.

She said supporting such initiatives are important in fostering well-rounded development for learners. Her sentiments were echoed by Makabongwe Pre-School principal Kate Hudson who expressed gratitude for the visit, highlighting the positive impact it had on the children.

“We are incredibly grateful to Glenwood High School and their partners for this thoughtful visit. It has brought great joy to our children ahead of the Easter break. The interaction with the Glenwood boys was truly special, and they set a wonderful example for our learners,” said Hudson.
