
During a media briefing on Friday uMkhonto weSizwe Party (MKP) announced Zandile Hlophe-Mkhwanazi as their pick for the mayoral chain.
An unexpected choice, Hlophe-Mkhwanazi is said to be popular in professional and technology sectors.
According to the party, Hlophe-Mkhwanazi holds a strong academic background in mathematical sciences and business management.
Action SA reveals eThekwini mayoral candidate
Hlophe-Mkhwanazi reportedly holds a BSc Honours in Computational and Applied Mathematics; Business & Entrepreneurial Certifications; Social Entrepreneurship Programme (with Distinction) from Gordon Institute of Business Science (2020).
Her expertise has been validated by several prominent national honours, the party said, including Digital Woman winner at the national GovTech Awards (2023); named one of the Top Ten Phenomenal Women by Telkom (2023); recognised as a Woman of Power by the Mail & Guardian (2022); honored as the Social Entrepreneur of the Year at the Santam Woman of the Future Awards (2021); listed among the Mail & Guardian’s Top 200 Young South Africans (2020).
EFF announces mayoral candidate for eThekwini
In her speech, Hlophe-Mkhwanazi briefly shared, “eThekwini needs change. We have a crisis of water, sewage, housing, hijacked buildings and high crime. As uMkhonto weSizwe Party, we are bringing change and will hit the ground running.”
She is recognised as the co-founder and CEO of GirlCode, a major South African non-profit organisation dedicated to empowering women and girls through tech education.
