One journey begins, two continue for three children at the heart of KZN Smile Week.

At just four months old, Graham Smith has taken the first step in a reconstructive journey that will shape the way he eats, speaks, develops and experiences the world around him. Graham was born with a prominent cleft lip extending towards his left nasal cavity.

Last week, he underwent his first reconstructive surgery to repair his lip during Smile Week at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital.

Alongside him were two young girls who know this journey well. Lwenkosi Cele and Nonkanyezi Zimu were patients at the hospital’s first Smile Week in October 2025. Both underwent cleft lip repairs as babies and returned, almost a year later, for the next stage of their reconstructive care: cleft palate surgery.

Tarri Parfitt, CEO of Smile Foundation, said, “Seeing Lwenkosi and Nonkanyezi return for their next surgery, while little Graham begins his journey, is incredibly special. It reminds us just how much can change for a child and their family with the right care and support.

For Graham, the journey has begun. For Lwenkosi and Nonkanyezi, it continues.
