eThekwini on high alert following Level 2 weather warning

Localised flooding is expected in parts of eThekwini with heavy rains and thurnderstorm anticipated to hit the municipality this evening.

ETHEKWINI is bracing itself for another bout of heavy rain this evening (April 12) following a Level 2 warning by the South African Weather Service.

Municipal spokesperson Gugu Sisilana said the Municipality’s Disaster Management Directorate and emergency services will be on high alert until Monday evening, when the thunderstorm is expected to subside.

“Heavy downpours, strong and damaging winds, excessive lightning, and hail are anticipated this evening, posing serious risks to life, property, and infrastructure,” said Sisilana.

The SAWS forecasts indicate that there will be widespread showers and severe thunderstorms across KwaZulu-Natal, with the eThekwini region expected to be significantly impacted.

Similarly to last Sunday’s events, flooding is expected on roads, bridges, and low-lying areas, while poor visibility and slippery road surfaces will make driving hazardous.

“Residents in flood-prone areas, including informal settlements, are urged to take precautionary measures to safeguard themselves and their families.

“Motorists are advised to reduce speed, maintain safe following distances, and exercise extreme caution on wet roads. Where possible, residents should remain indoors and avoid unnecessary travel,” said Sisilana.

She added, “The Municipality’s Disaster Management Directorate and emergency services are on high alert and prepared to respond to any incidents.

“Residents are encouraged to monitor official Municipal communication platforms for updates and are reminded never to attempt crossing swollen rivers or streams, particularly where water levels exceed ankle height.”
