Yoga Day returns to Durban with focus on unity and wellness
Durban is preparing to host one of Africa’s biggest International Day of Yoga events, with up to 5 000 participants expected to attend.
DURBAN is once again gearing up to host the International Day of Yoga (IDY), with thousands expected to attend this year’s event at the Durban Amphitheatre on June 21.
The 12th edition of the celebration, hosted by the Sivananda World Peace Foundation, is expected to attract between 4 000 and 5 000 participants from across the country.
The programme is co-ordinated by Prince Ishwar Ramlutchman Mabheka Zulu, founder of Durban’s International Day of Yoga movement and president of the Sivananda World Peace Foundation.

The organisation said Ramlutchman continues to promote yoga as “a national instrument of unity, wellness, and social cohesion”.

This year’s celebration has received support from the KZN Provincial Government, Premier Thami Ntuli, the national Minister of Health and the Zulu Royal Household.
Since the United Nations officially recognised June 21 as International Day of Yoga in 2014, Durban has emerged as one of Africa’s leading hosts for the global observance.

Attendance has steadily grown from a few hundred participants in its early years to more than 4500 attendees in 2025.
Organisers said Durban’s strong cultural links to the Indian community continue to strengthen the city’s position as Africa’s yoga capital.
