Oldest Comrades Marathon runner in our midst

The list of female runners in this Sunday’s Comrades Marathon reveals that a local favourite, and Stella Athletics Club member, is the second-oldest runner in this 99th edition.

Patricia Fisher, at 74 years and four months, comes just after American, Suzanne Koonce (74 years, eight months). This makes Fisher the eldest female in South Africa, KZN, and Durban. Her Comrades’ journey began in 1986, taking on a gruelling down run.

She is not shy about good health and her tenacious attitude, a combination that has seen her rake in a handful of medals and trophies in long-distance running.
“I have a competitive spirit, and blessed with good genes and good health, I have no illnesses, nor permanent injuries,” Fisher said.

Strutting her number 1011, Fisher reckons this edition of the Comrades could be a walk in the park. Sharing the moment with her is her son, Clint, who has been part of the run for the past seven years. The Comrades Marathon tattoo on her arm is a testament to the 34 years of starts and finishes.

Pat recalls how she could not finish last year’s comrades after she fell, injuring her upper body and being covered in blood. It all happened in Inchanga, coincidentally on the day of her 51st wedding anniversary. However, this incident did not dampen her spirit; she was emboldened to take part again in 2026.
Her ultimate goal this year is to finish the race in under 12 hours and beat her previous mark of 11:50 in 2024.

How does she prepare for the big day? “There is no specific diet that I follow; however, now and then, I beef up on potatoes and pasta, and keep hydrated. The most important thing is to train, which I do, including regular walks.”

She marvels at the support she has received from her running club, family, the community, and Adidas.
“I am truly excited about this weekend. Apart from the adrenaline on the road, I am always thrilled about the colourful vibe in Durban. It’s a truly special weekend with locals and international runners, buzzing and happy.”

She looks forward to taking on the big one, the 100th Comrades in 2027, in her quest to inspire younger and peer runners to at least do the Comrades once in their lives.
Come Sunday, June 14, Pat will be “nervous and ready” to step onto the start line at 05:15, carrying not only her hopes but those of her supporters.
