Revamped Clive Barker soccer tournament returns

Glenwood High School brings the Clive Barker U16 and U14 Soccer Tournament, with an added flair.

There will be 32 school teams from across the country battling for the ultimate win. Previously, the tournament catered for only the U16s, and this year the margins have expanded to the U14s. The soccer squads are hoping to unseat the reigning champions, Pinetown Boys’ High School.

Glenwood Boys High School acting headmaster Morné Scott said, “It is a privilege to host this exciting new event, bringing together talented young footballers from schools across the country to celebrate competition, sportsmanship and the spirit of the beautiful game.

“This tournament proudly honours the legacy of Glenwood old boy, the late Clive Barker, whose passion for football, commitment to youth development and pursuit of excellence continue to inspire players and coaches alike.”

Soccer director at GHS, Khaya Mngwengwe, is excited to welcome the schools to the Green Machine turf. “I thank every player, coach, official, and supporter for being part of this exciting chapter in youth development and sportsmanship,” Mngwengwe said.

The tournament will run from July 15-18. Gates open at 07:00, and a R20 entry fee for the public gets one in. Bring and braai will be accommodated at the Ivan Clark Pavilion area; GHS will provide fires. Alcohol will not be permitted.

On July 18, the Clive Barker Foundation Dream Team will clash with AmaZulu, in honour of the legendary Barker “The Dog”.
