10-year licences approved, drive-through collection heads to KZN
Drivers could soon renew their licences once every decade, with the added convenience of a planned drive-through collection service in KZN.
ACROSS the country, light motor vehicle drivers with licences due for renewal in the coming months are celebrating Cabinet’s decision to extend the validity period of driving licence cards from five to 10 years.
“This is a big win for the people!” said Siziwe Dayi-dayi Kenqu on Facebook.
Although the date is yet to be confirmed of when this change in the law will come to effect, Cabinet approved the extension of the validity period of driving licences for Codes A, A1, B and EB.
The 10-year renewal period will apply only to light motor vehicles. Heavy commercial and public transport vehicles will remain subject to the existing two or five-year renewal cycles while Professional Drivers Permits will also remain on the two-renewal cycle.
“The implementation of the extended validity period requires legislative amendments. Motorists must therefore continue to renew expired driving licence cards until the new law takes effect,” said Cabinet as licence holder asked about their soon expiring five-year permit.

This was also emphasised by the KwaZulu-Natal Transport MEC Siboniso Duma who welcomed the groundbreaking announcement.
“We are emphasising that motorists are encouraged to renew expired driving license cards until a new law extending the validity period comes into effect,” said Duma who mentioned other in-roads being made by the department.
“We have agreed that the introduction of the first-ever drive-through driver’s license collection in Pinetown should be piloted and be accelerated in other DLTCs moving forward.”
He added, “While we recognise that demand for services may continue to result in queues at our facilities, we cannot accept inefficiencies in the way services are delivered.
“We need to reduce waiting times where possible, streamline processes, and ensure that every citizen is treated with dignity, respect, and professionalism.”
