TWO months after Berea Mail paid a visit to the legendary Comrades Marathon runner, it has been reported that he died aged 90 on Tuesday.

Kenny Craig, a die-hard loyalist, had been an ardent fan of the Comrades since he was a little boy, watching runners pass Berea, and he knew then his name and number 145 would be etched in history books.

Craig may have looked frail, but his eyes sparkled, and his face beamed as he told of his own Comrades Marathon journey.

“It is the best journey of my lifetime. The feeling from the start to the finish line cannot be described in words, a combination of excitement and nerves,” he said then.

Craig’s running club, Savages Athletic Club, through a member, Norrie Williamson, shared a moving tribute. Craig was one of the founding members of the club.

“A legend is lost. Very sad news that Kenneth Craig, who was the first to run 40 consecutive Comrades, has passed away. His passing is a major loss to the sport and road running history. Ken is and was a legend in the sport. As tough as granite, and as full of fun as the naughtiest of school kids.

“There are more stories and legacies around Kenneth John Craig than books can fill. He has inspired and motivated so many people in running and Comrades.

Our lives will be poorer for the passing of Ken. Condolences to family and all who were fortunate to cross paths with Ken. Your loss will be shared with hundreds and thousands of others. Tonight a true running legend has crossed his finish line,” Williamson shared.
