Theunissen crowned half-marathon queen

On its bold return to Durban, the Savages Challenge made a remarkable statement.

Sunday morning saw a bustle of footprints at the Blue Lagoon precinct as Savages Athletic Club hosted its annual event, which boasted over 2000 runners who took part in the 21.1km, 10km, and 5km race.

At the end, it was Bridget Theunissen who reigned supreme in the women’s 21.1km with an impressive time of 01:17:48. On her heels were Nokuthula Ntshangase and Shani Silver, who bagged second and third positions respectively. The men’s side saw Victor Lapit snatching victory.

Race director Gordon Diener was impressed with the 2026 offering. “We had wonderful weather conditions and a wonderful turnout, especially with the Morningside and Durban North participants who came out in numbers. We thank everyone who supported this year’s Challenge, and next year we plan to double the numbers for a bigger and better edition,” Diener said.

He added that the race was well organised, and they were looking into having more events.
