Durban ICC makes history with 21st World Travel Award
The award is being hailed as a boost for the city’s ambitions to attract major international conferences, investment and tourism.
THE Durban International Convention Centre (ICC) is celebrating after adding another major achievement to its growing number of accolades.
The ICC was named Africa’s Leading Meetings and Conference Centre at the recent 2026 World Travel Awards in Zanzibar, securing the title for a record 21st time since the category was introduced in 2000.
Durban ICC CEO Lindiwe Rakharebe said the award reflected the strength of the partnerships supporting the city’s business events sector.
“Winning this award for the twenty-first time is a proud moment in our history, but it also inspires us to look ahead.

“No organisation achieves sustained success in isolation. This recognition reflects the strength of the partnerships we have built over many years and our shared commitment to positioning Durban, KwaZulu-Natal and South Africa as globally competitive destinations for business events, tourism and investment.”
Since opening its doors in 1997, the Durban ICC has hosted major international conferences, conventions, corporate events and entertainment productions. Rakharebe said the events have contributed to tourism and job creation while maintaining Durban’s competitive edge.
“Awards such as these are never the destination; they are milestones on a journey of continuous improvement.”
She said the latest recognition adds to the ICC’s international reputation for service, sustainability, governance and operational excellence.

“Our responsibility is to continue raising the standard of excellence, creating opportunities for our people and partners, and ensuring that the Durban ICC remains a catalyst for business, tourism and economic development for many years to come.”
Rakharebe added that the achievement should also encourage the centre to continue creating opportunities for Durban and its people.
The achievement was also lauded by eThekwini Municipality Mayor Cyril Xaba who said the accolade demonstrates sound leadership.
“Recognition at the highest levels such as this is what makes Durban a preferred destination for meetings, leisure and entertainment. We urge our team not to take their foot off the pedal, but to continue raising the bar and making us proud,” said Xaba.
