Umbilo school’s rugby players scouted for international tour
Coach Michael Van Wyk said players were selected for the international tournament by scouts who attended a local tournament.
SEVERAL rugby players from Port Natal School were selected to take part in the Mauritius U19 international tour taking place in October.
Coach Michael Van Wyk said players were selected by scouts who attended a local tournament.
“We took part in a tournament at Kingsway High School in Amanzimtoti. During a pre-tour briefing, we were told that there would be scouts at the tournament looking for boys to participate in the Mauritius tournament. I was contacted about two weeks later, and eight of my boys were selected, as well as about 12 boys from other schools,” said Van Wyk.

The following players were selected: Shane Du Plessis, Bernard Pieterse, Henry Louw, Nico Barnard, Kusasalethu Malevu, Jayden Stuurman, Jayden Alberts and Jordan Calonne.

Each player is now tasked with raising the funds needed for the trip. The boys need to raise just over R30 000 each to cover costs, including flights and accommodation.
“Not all of the boys will be able to participate. We need at least 12 boys for a team to have a complete squad. If we can raise funds for more than 12 boys, then an additional team will be created to take part in the tournament,” explained the coach.

Van Wyk hopes to assist the players in raising funds.
“This is an international tour. There will be international coaches, and it could open doors for the player. On top of that, some boys are in matric next year, and this is a milestone for them if they want to take their rugby career further,” he said.
