TWO suspects who are alleged to be linked to multiple robberies in the Morningside area were apprehended by police while allegedly committing another robbery on Tuesday, February 21. They are due to appear in court this Thursday.

According to Sergeant Zanele Khomo, on Tuesday, February 21, at about 17:20, Durban Central crime-prevention members were performing stop-and-search crime prevention to follow through with the robberies that had been reported in the Morningside area.

“While driving by the corners of Wolsey and Percy Osborne, members noticed a Toyota Etios that was parked on the side of the road with one occupant.  As they were checking the ownership of the vehicle, a lady was heard screaming from the same road. Members swiftly responded, and they were informed by the complainant that she had been robbed of her handbag and cellphone by two males at knifepoint,” said Khomo.

Khomo said that the complainant then pointed in the direction they ran towards.

“A chase ensured between police and suspects. Two suspects, who were about to jump into the same vehicle that was parked on the side of the road, were apprehended and arrested. The driver of the vehicle sped off. Suspects were found in possession of knives and a cellphone which were identified positively by the complainant as hers,” said Khomo.

Khomo says that the suspects, aged between 22 and 29, will be profiled and checked if they are linked to any other robberies that have been reported in the Durban Central policing precinct.

“The suspects are expected to appear before the Durban Magistrate’s court on Thursday, February 23, for robbery and possession of a dangerous weapon,” concluded Khomo.
