UKZN student runs 672km to raise awareness of green ecology

The aim of the awareness for the student is to raise funds to start a Non-Profit Organisation (NPO) to promote agriculture and keep his hometown of KwaMaphumulo ecologically green.

THIRD-YEAR Bachelor of Arts student at the University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) recently embarked on a run to raise awareness of green ecology.

Samkelo Nzama’s run started on 5 March in Johannesburg and it is expected to end in his hometown KwaMaphumulo on 20 March. The 16 day run consists of 42km per day, and the overall journey is 672km.

Nzama who is also a deputy chairperson of UKZN’s Athlete Club, said the aim of this awareness is to raise funds to start a Non-Profit Organisation (NPO) to promote agriculture and keep his hometown of KwaMaphumulo ecologically green.

“Running is my life and I believe that by doing this run I can transform the lives of community members. KwaMaphumulo or Kranskop is a rural area, known for sugarcane harvesting. People in the area depend on agriculture for a living. I am saddened that the waste in our communities kills our livestock and crops,” he said.

The student expressed that the local people are unaware of how to manage waste ecologically and it eventually washes into the rivers and ocean. He revealed: “Tin cans lying around often injure cattle and donkeys. Plastic and paper are eaten by livestock, causing sickness or death.”

Nzama is appealing to the public to donate to his worthy cause by contacting him via email at nzamasamkelo@gmail.com or WhatsApp/Call: 060 955 1400.
