Local artist set to host showcases around Durban

Local artist Mpilo Gumede will be hosting an Arts and Fashion Exhibition at the Bean and Bistro Restaurant in the Point area on May 6.

LOCAL artist Mpilonhle Gumede from Musgrave will be hosting art exhibitions in Durban in May and June and is encouraging local residents to support his upcoming shows.

From a disadvantaged background in Mtunzini, Gumede became a self-taught artist who moves effortlessly between the world of arts and fashion. “My work doesn’t qualify for the ordinary world. I make art in everything I do; whether it is fashion or a creative art piece, mine has to stand out,” said Gumede. “I also use mostly recycled materials to create my designs.”

On June 16, he will be hosting a Fashion Parade at the Workshop Shopping Centre where he will showcase five designs, each with a theme. “Each design has a message: STOP: Homophobia, albinophobia, xenophobia, gender-based violence and racism. All these expressions will be handcrafted and presented in the form of arts,” said Gumede.
