Cash-in-transit robbery leaves one dead and several injured

An attempted cash-in-transit robbery led to a shooting incident and car accident that has killed one person and injured nine others.

RUSSELL Street in the Durban CBD has been closed off following a shooting incident and car accident during a cash-in-transit robbery this morning that has left one person dead and nine others injured.

According to ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson, paramedics began receiving multiple calls about the horrific scene just after 09:40 this morning. “ALS Paramedics received numerous calls of a shooting incident, together with a car accident, in Russell Street, just after Victoria Street in the Durban CBD. On arrival, paramedics found total chaos – it is alleged that there was a cash-in-transit robbery, and the suspects randomly started shooting,” said Jamieson.

Unfortunately, one person, believed to be a shop owner, had sustained a gunshot wound to his head and was declared deceased at the scene. “The cash-in-transit vehicle then sped away, trying to avoid the confrontation, and collided with a taxi before veering off the road and then colliding into multiple vendors on the side of the road. A total of seven vendors and one taxi driver have sustained injuries ranging from moderate to serious and have been stabilised on scene by multiple ambulance services. They have been transported through to nearby hospitals for the care that they require,” said Jamieson.

One of the guards sustained moderate injuries and is currently under the care of advanced life support paramedics. “Russell Street has been closed to all traffic while the investigations are underway, and I’d advise all motorists to avoid this area at all costs,” concluded Jamieson.
