THIS Saturday marks the anniversary of the tragic murder of award-winning rapper Kiernan Forbes, popularly known as AKA.

The hip-hop star was just 35 years old when he was shot and killed while leaving the Wish restaurant on Florida Road last year.

This devastating news rocked the nation last February, and the South African Police Service (SAPS) has come under fire for not having been able to crack the high-profile murder case.

On Saturday morning, the South African Police Services (SAPS) issued a statement with an update on the AKA murder investigation.

According to police spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe, police are committed to solving this case. “We would like to assure affected families and the public that in the past year, we have spent countless hours and endless manpower on tracing those behind these murders.”

In the statement, Mathe noted that the police are determined to prosecute. “We have a dedicated team of specialists, seasoned detectives, analysts and technicians working closely with the office of the Director of Public Prosections (DPP) in KZN,” said Mathe.

The police spokesperson said the police have made progress and have positive evidence linking identified suspects. “Others are in custody related to other matters. Others are on the run, and the team is hot on their heels,” said Mathe.

She says the police are aware of limited communication with the affected families. “The investigation is at a very sensitive stage, and we have therefore taken the decision to limit all communication related to this matter.”

“The limited communication was not at all intended to undermine any of the affected families. We will, however, endeavour to improve on this in the near future,” said Mathe.
