Big entry numbers for this weekend’s Tour Durban

About 3 000 entries from the huge riding communities in the greater Durban area are all preparing for ‘Durban’s Favourite Weekend of Cycling’.

DURBAN’S cyclists will be converging from all corners of the city on Cornubia Mall on Saturday (April 20) and Moses Mabhida on Sunday (April 21) for the annual aQuellé Tour Durban.

About 3 000 entries from the huge riding communities in the greater Durban area – from Ballito and uMhlanga in the north, to the Berea, Bluff and South Coast riders in the south, to the Pinetown and Kloof in the West – are all preparing for ‘Durban’s Favourite Weekend of Cycling’.

The off-road riders have their chance on Saturday, from Cornubia, in the aQuellé Tour Durban MTB, powered by Cycle Lab, and they will be able to take part in the traditional 40km, 20km and 10km MTB races on Saturday. There is a new 48km gravel race which has been added to the mix, and trail runners are also included for the first time this year.

On Sunday, the ‘roadies’ can get their fix with full road closure along the M4 as far as Mdloti as riders compete over the 110km, 42km and 28km distances.

The great news for the riders is that the weather is looking absolutely perfect. Saturday and Sunday should be dry with hardly any winds, and the temperatures are predicted to be warm. For the MTB and gravel riders, some rain early this week will probably be enough to settle some of the dust and make the tracks fast and grippy without leaving residual water.

Race registration is on Friday, April 19, and Saturday, April 20, at Cycle Lab Cornubia.

All the MTB, gravel and trail run events are on Saturday, April 20, from near Cornubia Mall. The road races are on Sunday, April 21, starting and finishing at Moses Mabhida.
