Umbilo church to honour those who died in World War I
This week, the world is paying homage to war heroes who lost their lives fighting in World War I in 1918. St Cyprian's Church will add their voices in remembering this historic event.
ST CYPRIAN’S Church in Umbilo will hold a Remembrance Day event this Sunday in honour of all men, women and pets who sacrificed their lives in the line of duty.
The service will be held on November 11, at 09:00, marking the 11th day of the 11th month of the end of World War I (WW1), which was at the 11th hour.
“An invitation is extended to the community to join this auspicious occasion which marks the end of WW1 when the Armistice was signed in 1918. There will be a lament by a piper, and the trumpeter will play the Last Post and hymns suitable for the occasion. The MOTHS will do their tribute at the service. We encourage the community to support this day and honour the memory of those who paid this sacrifice,” said Fr Dane Elsworth from St Cyprian’s.

Remembrance Day is a memorial day observed since the end of the First World War in 1918, when at 11:00 on the 11th day of the 11th month, the guns on the Western Front fell silent after four years of horrific fighting. The carnage of the ‘war to end all wars’ came to a close, leaving millions dead and even more suffering after-effects.
The year 2024 also marks 110 years since the outbreak of the First World War.
In South Africa, Remembrance commemorations are spearheaded by the South African Legion – a national organisation established in 1921. SA Legion is the oldest military veterans’ support association in the country.
After the service at St Cyprian’s, the MOTHS will have refreshments. All are welcome. For more details, contact 031 205 3710.
