DHS turn up the heat to storm into Halala Cup quarters
Durban High School climbed from fourth to second in Group D to secure a place in the Curro Halala Cup quarter-finals.
DURBAN High School were one of the surprising teams of the Curro Halala Cup following their second place finish in Group D which secured them a spot in knockout stages of the soccer tournament held in Johannesburg over the week.
DHS produced an impressive turnaround on the second day of the competition, climbing from fourth place in Group D to finish second behind Meridian Pinehurst on 10 points. With qualification hanging in the balance, DHS delivered when it mattered most, recording victories over Meridian Pinehurst and Vaal High School to book their place in the quarter finals.
“The result made Durban High School one of the surprise packages of the tournament as the round-robin stage reached a dramatic conclusion,” said the organisers.
DHS faced a difficult route into the last eight, but responded under pressure to keep its title hopes alive. Their progress came on a day when several established contenders, including defending champions Northern Academy, saw their campaigns come to an abrupt end.

Northern Academy’s title defence ended after a difficult second day, while Rosina Sedibane secured their own quarter-final place with a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Waterstone College.
DHS’s Pool D opponents also produced some eye-catching performances. Meridian Pinehurst remained one of the tournament’s most impressive attacking sides despite suffering one defeat, scoring nine goals and conceding just one.
However, their defeat against DHS proved costly as the Durban side secured the second qualification spot. Elsewhere, Virginia and St Anne’s finished top of Pools B and C respectively, while CBC Mt Edmund and Clapham High also advanced to the knockout stages.
At the end of the tournament, St Anne’s Technical High School won the boys’ division of the Curro Halala Cup 2026 after defeating Christian Brothers’ College (CBC) Mount Edmund in the gold match held on Monday at HeronBridge College in Johannesburg.
