Presidential Working Groups partner to promote Durban as premier holiday destination

As the festive season looms and holidaymakers are gearing up to head to Durban, various Presidential Working Groups have plans to draw the crowds by making the city accessible and bursting with entertainment.

SOUTHERN Sun Hotel chain has reaffirmed its long-term commitment to the City of Durban through a partnership with Durban Tourism. The hotel group is continuing its investment in the region through a summer holiday activation to revitalise tourism and position Durban as South Africa’s top holiday destination.

This collaboration highlights the dedication of both Southern Sun and Durban Tourism to promoting South Africa’s beloved coastal destination, aiming to rekindle excitement for the region’s rich diversity and vibrant attractions. Convenient daily flights from all major cities to Durban’s King Shaka International Airport further enhance accessibility, making it easier for visitors to reach the city’s renowned beaches and attractions.

The pair promises beautiful and safe beaches, vibrant energy, historical sights, family-friendly activities and an array of accommodations within the region, making the city one of the best destinations this season.

Samantha Croft, Southern Sun’s Durban regional operations director, shared, “As Southern Sun, we chose to partner with Durban Tourism as we have found that “private / public partnerships” are vital for Durban, to ensure that we have a successful December season. This work was started as a result of the President visiting Durban in April 2024 and requested that the various Presidential Working Groups are formed, to ensure that we address the revitalisation of Tourism in Durban. The number one issue is the condition of the water & sanitation infrastructure, which has resulted in many beach closures over the last 20 months (since the floods). Whilst the project, spans over a 36 month period to resolve fully, many issues have been resolved, which has resulted in very few beach closure over the last 6 months.

“The City has also identified the importance of blue flag status for our beaches and will be actively pursuing this once we have addressed the infrastructure issues. The City has also extended the ambassador programme, which addresses cleanliness issues within the City and along the promenade until 2025.

Deputy head of Durban Tourism Winile Mntungwa said, “Our long-standing partnership with Southern Sun is built on a shared goal – promoting Durban as South Africa’s top holiday destination.”

“The partnership between Southern Sun and Durban Tourism underscores not only the importance of collaboration in boosting local tourism but also the commitment to providing visitors with unforgettable experiences in Durban. Whether you’re seeking adventure, relaxation, or cultural exploration, Durban promises to deliver an enriching holiday experience”, concluded Mntungwa.
