This Movember, men are called to action to prioritise their health and help detect prostate cancer early.
AS we observe Prostate Cancer Awareness Month this November, men are reminded to prioritise their health and well-being. Prostate and testicular cancers are silent killers affecting thousands worldwide, but early detection and awareness can save lives.

Statistics
According to the Daredevil Run, an awareness initiative, prostate cancer will affect one in six men in their lifetime. By 2030, it’s expected to be the most common cancer among South African men. Black African men face a 60% higher risk. Testicular cancer, though less common, leads among young men aged 15–35, impacting 1 in 250.
Early Detection Crucial
Phakamani Empowerment, a local men’s health organisation, emphasises that early detection boosts prostate cancer survival rates up to 95% and testicular cancer cure rates up to 98%. Regular check-ups and self-examinations are vital. The organisation suggests men take control and perform testicular self-examination in these three steps:
1. After a warm bath or shower, cup one testicle with both hands.
2. Gently roll it between thumb and fingers, applying slight pressure.
3. Check for lumps, size changes or irregularities.

Important notes:
– One testis may be slightly larger; this is normal.
– Consult a doctor if irregularities are found.
– A physical examination, biopsy and ultrasound may be necessary.
Men are called to take action and take control of their health by consulting their doctor about prostate cancer screening, performing regular self-exams and prioritising their well-being.
