WATCH: Cheeky Daredevil ready to dash

Westville resident Phil Tomlinson will take part in the Daredevil Run on Friday, November 1. The event shines a spotlight on men’s health, especially concerning cancer.

THE Hollard Daredevil Run’s mission is to raise awareness about male cancers, and it is taking place this Friday, November 1.

Westville resident Phil Tomlinson will be among the brave souls running in Durban in purple Speedos to raise awareness about cancer.

This event will, once again, be bringing vital awareness back to hoods and companies across the country.

Tomlinson said that running in a Speedo is not pretty, but it’s for a serious cause, and he has been supporting this event for the past 13 years.

“Testicular cancer is most common in men aged 15 to 35 years and is one of the most treatable cancers when detected early. By baring it all, we are encouraging men to be bold enough to check themselves and take proactive steps for their health.”

Started 15 years ago, the event has become a nationwide phenomenon that brings attention to prostate and testicular cancers. Since 2021, the Hollard Daredevil Run has featured a main event at Zoo Lake in Johannesburg, along with smaller runs in neighbourhoods nationwide, with last year’s collective event being the biggest to date.

“Every year, the run has a positive impact nationally, enabling a culture that urges men to talk more openly about male cancers, the risks, the symptoms and the importance of early detection,” said Allistair Khanyi, head of brand and communications at Hollard.

“This is a cause that is not only important to our business but equally meaningful to our people as parents, brothers, sons, sisters and daughters.”

Black African men are disproportionately affected by prostate cancer, with a 60% higher risk of developing the disease compared to other population groups. While not as common, testicular cancer remains the most prevalent cancer among young men aged 15 to 35, affecting approximately 1 in 250 males.

Entry tickets for the Daredevil Run are now available from Ticketpro at a cost of R180, which includes the courier of a registration pack and a complimentary purple Speedo.

Sanelisiwe Tsinde

My name is Sanelisiwe Tsinde, and I'm a mother of two boys and very family-oriented. Being a community journalist for years, I can proudly say I love writing about positive community news articles and giving a voice to the voiceless. Seeing people getting assistance warms my heart. Every day is a different challenge and a new learning opportunity. I supply news for our trusted publication weekly, and a few years ago, Caxton ventured into online publication, so I contribute daily to the websites. I could say I am a multimedia journalist, and working in a community newspaper is beneficial as we do not focus on one thing but we do a bit of everything.
