5 financial tips for Black Friday frenzy
Who doesn't love a good discount? There are ways, though, to ensure that you're enjoying these discounts within your financial means.
BLACK November sales are everywhere with retailers already advertising discounts leading up to the big day – Black Friday (November 29). Typically an American shopping event, Black Friday crept its way into South African wallets over the years.
To make sure you really get some bang out of your buck, and that you still have some bucks left over, Caxton Local Media Durban asked financial advisor, Storm Hurlbatt Van Deventer, for a few tips and tricks.

“My Black Friday mantra is A great deal should never mess up my financial vibe or pile on debt drama. Keep that in mind, but have fun out there, score some REAL deals, and keep those wallets happy,” she said.
Here are five tips from the financial guru herself:
1. Set a clear budget
Treat your budget like the boss – it tells your money where to go. Many South Africans are juggling credit cards and loans, so don’t let the thrill of the sale turn into post-Black Friday regret. Stick to what you can afford and avoid turning December into a scary debt month.
2. Wants vs needs: The ultimate showdown
Make a list, check it twice, and don’t let flashy sales make you forget what you actually need. Essentials first, shiny temptations later. A list is your secret weapon to dodge unnecessary buys.
3. Research like a pro
Google is your bestie. Before hitting add to cart, check the original prices to make sure it’s not just a fake ‘discount’. A quick search could save you big bucks and a lot of buyer’s remorse.
4. Read the fine print – no skimming!
In the Black Friday frenzy, it’s easy to miss the small stuff. Don’t get caught off guard by:
-
- sneaky return policies
- surprising delivery fees
- shipping that takes longer than a holiday romance
5. Reflect before you swipe
Before you dive into checkout, take a moment. Ask yourself: “Would I buy this at full price?” If the answer is ‘no’, you might want to hit pause. Remember, not every deal is worth the splurge.
Happy shopping!
